Tegu FAQs

Please forgive us, there's a lot of text here.

Can I place an order over the phone?
Absolutely! Call us at 877-TEGU-TOY (877-834-8869).

How are Tegu wooden blocks different from other toy blocks?
Anyone who’s played with our magnetic wooden blocks can answer this question.  It’s not just that our wooden toys are magnetic, it’s the play value the magnets add.  The ability to build beyond the traditional constraints of gravity is incredibly liberating; now you can build out, not just up!  Also, working with the polarity of the magnets on the fly is a fun challenge; it generates more critical thinking and educational opportunities than you might expect, and critical thinking is good!

I can't see the magnets on the wooden blocks. Where are they?
The magnets are hidden inside the wooden toys and are therefore not visible or accessible. This is thanks to the thoughtful toy design and quality toy manufacturing behind the Tegu concept. Safety, quality, and durability are of the utmost importance to Tegu. Our toys boast a patent-pending solid hardwood construction which keeps the magnets inside. We are a premium product, and, deeply knowing our own supply chain and owning our manufacturing plant, we control the process from start to finish (a true rarity in toys). We are also required to work with toy testing agencies who have verified our compliance with the applicable federal regulations, and you can view our CPSIA General Conformity Certificates below.

Why should I pay so much for wooden toy blocks when I can get an action figure for $12?
Handcrafted wooden toys are always going to cost more than injection molded plastic, but when was the last time you saw an action figure played with for years at a time? Tegu's magnetic wooden building blocks offer a unique combination of quality craftsmanship, luxurious materials, and a wholesome and developmentally beneficial play experience for years to come. It should come as no surprise that you get what you pay for in toys.

Where are these kids' toys made?
These toys are made in Tegucigalpa--the capital city of Honduras. Learn more about why we make children's toys in Honduras.

How big or small are the wooden blocks?
Tegu's educational blocks index to one another, and we work in 30 millimeter units. To illustrate, one cube is 30x30x30mm. Specifically, here are the inch conversions:

Cubes: 1.18"
Jumbo Planks: 0.60" x 3.54"
Long Planks: 0.30" x 4.72"
Short Planks: 0.30" x 2.36"

Another great way to get a sense for their size and scale is to watch some of our videos:

Blocks In Action!

As a point of reference, we have seen numerous children play with the blocks and ‘grow into’ them over time, and we are confident that you will find this to be a timeless toy and a great investment. The cubes, especially, are a good clasping size for younger kids, and the play tends to mature with the child. Happy Building!

Could you be a little more specific about your sets in terms of dimensions, weight, and numbers of certain pieces?
We sure could! Our Original Set package has dimensions of 7.5 (L) x 9 3/16 (W) x 2 .5 (H) (inches) and weighs in at 3.25 pounds. It’s comprised of 20 cubes, 16 long planks, 10 short planks, and 6 jumbo planks; basically everything you need to build your own small village. Our Discovery Set is a wee bit smaller; 7 (L) x 5.25 (W) x 2.75 (H) (inches) and 1.5 pounds. The Tegu Discovery Set includes 12 cubes, 4 short planks, 10 long planks, and a ton of introductory creative play.

Are these toys safe?
Yes Yes Yes. The magnets are hidden inside the blocks and are therefore not visible or accessible. This is thanks to the thoughtful toy design and quality toy manufacturing behind the Tegu concept. Safety, quality, and durability are of the utmost importance to Tegu. Our blocks boast a patent-pending solid hardwood construction which keeps the magnets inside. We are a premium product, and, owning our own supply chain and manufacturing plant, we control the process from start to finish (a true rarity in toys). We are also required to work with toy testing agencies who have verified our compliance with the applicable federal regulations, and you can view our CPSIA General Conformity Certificates below. All that said, our goal is transparency; every package of Tegu wooden toys prominently bears the following message:

Ages 3+ | Warning: This product contains small magnets. Swallowed magnets can cause complications leading to serious infections and death. Seek immediate medical attention if magnets are swallowed or inhaled.

My dog got his paws on a few of my classic wooden toys from Tegu. What should I do?
Ruh roh, pups and wooden blocks may not always mix! If your canine has chewed on your Tegu set and altered the face of the blocks, we encourage you to discontinue play with the damaged blocks immediately. Please contact us so we can arrange for the affected blocks to be returned to us and safely recycled - free of charge! We want to ensure that the original wooden design we have worked so hard to perfect is the exact one in your child’s toy chest. Furthermore, we want to ensure the highest level of toy safety.

What happens when I buy a Tegu construction toy?
Basically, you get a package of sweet toys in the mail AND your kid starts his or her journey to the top of the class (assuming they aren't already there). But wait, that's not all: Tegu is committed to using its business to bless Honduras, one of the poorest nations in the western hemisphere. Specifically, when you add our toys to your cart, you are given the opportunity to direct a portion of the proceeds to two Tegu initiatives: reforestation and education for the impoverished. It's your choice; for every toy you buy, Tegu will plant 12 trees in Honduras or fund one day of school for a child who would otherwise work on a trash dump near Tegucigalpa.

Can you tell me more about your tree planting?
Tegu partners with a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that does tree planting projects worldwide including many projects in Honduras. Not only do we want to support sustainable forest management through our wood sourcing, we actually hope to see the depleted areas of the Honduran forests grow back. Your purchase can help to achieve that; we specifically direct funds to tree-planting projects within Honduras. You'll see a counter on Tegu.com that indicates how many trees Tegu customers have helped plant to date.

Can you tell me more about the Honduran school?
We're partnering with a school called AFE (Amor, Fe y Esperanza) that was started by Jeony Ordoñez (director) and his wife, Jessy (principal), to provide an education for the children whose families work at the Tegucigalpa city trash dump. These children, prior to having the opportunity to attend AFE, worked alongside their parents picking out food and recyclables from garbage to earn a living. AFE has kids from nursery age up to middle school, and is helping them find a brighter future. Tegu helps by funding days of school for AFE children through the purchases of our customers. You'll see a counter on Tegu.com that indicates how many days of school Tegu customers have funded to date.

Are any of the woods you’re using endangered?
The main wood we source in Honduras is called Huesito (Spanish for "little bone"), which is a hardwood found in abundance in Honduras' forests. This species is not endangered, but even so we are of course careful about how it is harvested - we want it to be abundant for our great-great-grandchildren too! You'll notice we also do some limited toy production using Mahogany, a wood that is listed on the CITES Appendix II species list ("Appendix II includes species not necessarily threatened with extinction, but in which trade must be controlled in order to avoid utilization incompatible with their survival."). We apply the same meticulous criteria to our sourcing of Mahogany that we do to other woods, making sure we do not contribute in any way to its potential endangerment.

What if my order contains backordered products and non-backordered products?
If this is the case, we will ship your entire order in one shipment, and the entire shipment will not ship until the backordered items are ready. As always, we will send you a shipping update email when your order ships!

I just purchased a set of these awesome blocks but haven’t received an order confirmation or shipment notification email yet. What should I do?
Oh no! We send our customers an order confirmation email immediately following their purchase. Please add This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to your safe senders list and check your spam and junk mail folders to see if it was incorrectly filtered. If after exploring the forgotten depths of your email account you still haven’t found us, please send us an email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Do you charge tax, and if so, why?
Tegu must charge sales tax in any state where it has a physical presence. This means that purchases in California and Connecticut are subject to local sales tax. Sales shipped to all other states are not subject to sales tax.

I like your customer service form, but what if I just want to talk to someone at Tegu?
There is nothing the Tegu team dislikes more from their own customer service experiences than being on hold for ages (“All our representatives are busy now. Please hold for the next available representative.”). Rather than make you wait for us to become available, we ask that you fill out our form and we will give you a call back. If you have a preferred time you would like to hear from us, feel free to write that into our form. We will do everything we can to respond within 48 hours. If you'd like to reach us immediately, call us at 877-TEGU-TOY (877-834-8869).

Can I visit Tegu’s factory in Honduras?
Most definitely! We encourage all of our customers to visit the tropical country of Honduras. While it has its challenges, we are striving to create a small beacon of hope for the Honduran people. We are proud investors in the people and industry of Honduras and want to share it with anyone who's interested. Please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. I love what you guys are doing. Can I join your team?
Tegu is always looking for men and women of integrity, passion, and excellence to join the team. While we are not currently hiring any full-time employees outside of Honduras, we are always interested in meeting new people knowing that a hiring need may arise in the future. If you would like to send us a brief email and resume expressing your interest in our company, please send your information to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. We have also had many early successes with summer interns and short-term, project-based help both in the US and Honduras. If you are college student or graduate student looking for a UNIQUE way to use a summer or school term, please get in touch. Warning: a little time may be life-altering, so beware.

I want to get rid of my Tegu toy. What should I do?

You need JavaScript enabled to view it or call 877-TEGU-TOY (877-834-8869). We will gladly pay for shipping to take it off your hands.
